Liesel Meminger

Liesel was the character that was the most interesting to me. The strength of this little girl almost brought me to tears at the end of the novel. She changed a lot throughout the story but she still seemed strong in the beginning when her brother died. Her brother died and her mother left her and Liesel still had more room to love. This love lead her to bravery that astonished me in the story. When she walked out into the street with Max it created a whole new level of hate for the Nazis to me. She stole books but Liesel still struggled to do what was right instead of what was wrong. I don't think Liesel was ever really innocent to the struggles of death throughout the story. Her brother's death seemed to make her more realistic and capable of understanding the gravity of the situation around her. She kept Max a secret even to her best friend because she understood the necessity of the secret. She definitely became tougher through her experiences in the book. From small things like being taken into the hallway by the nun to large things like reading during air raids and reading to her neighbor after her son's death. Liesel was definitely the character that impacted me the most. Her bravery and her love for her family and friends was unshakable throughout the  story and Death was correct in saying that her story was extraordinary and one to retell.

  1. I really agree with alot that you said. I think you summarized the characters change throughout the novel and what it meant overall very well.

I think that her going through all of these hard times did make her stronger as a person and ultimately let her understand the situation with the Jews. I think these times made her do what she thought was right instead of following what everyone else was doing and that definitley takes a strong person.

I also really liked the part where she reads the stories in the basement during air raids. I think that shows how strong of a person she was that she took control of a terrifying situation and tried to bring peace to everyone. I think she is a really great character.

  2. Liesel was a very interesting character in the novel. I hadn't picked up on the fact that she was so strong in the beginning when her brother died. She was very strong with his death and I'm glad you mentioned that.

She did have so much love and compassion for her family and she also stayed very strong for Max to not tell the secret. Her life was definitely one to retell again and again.

  3. i agree with the fact that Liesel is a very strong girl who's been through a lot throughout her life. The obstacles that were put in front of her were enormous including her brother dying, her mom leaving, not being able to read etc. I think she became stronger throughout the book because of these events or challenges she faced, which in the long run made her into what she was by the end of the book.
